Visibility at high altitude / Visibility issues with route option on - chriszoepound - 2016-03-27 hello. today i was flying and the visibility was 5 miles at my departing airport. i took off and noticed that the visibility stayed 5 miles and foggy in the proximity of the airport, all the way up to cruise altitude 15000 feet. The weather was good, clear at cruise altitude, no turbulence, with a few scattered clouds below and as i got out over the sea visibility looked a little better, like maybe 10 miles, but still it was all a bit foggy. to what i remember from real life flights...in the clear above the clouds, at high altitude..the visibility should be a bit better I know about the limitations of fsx but im wondering if something could be done about this, to make visibility gradually improve as the aircraft ascends(in clear weather or above the clouds). Maybe a way to have multiple visibility readings from one weather station..¿?¿? Visibility at high altitude / Visibility issues with route option on - chriszoepound - 2016-03-27 Just noticed something...When the ROUTE option is used.. the visibility worsens... but when the ROUTE option isnt used visibility is much better for some reason =/ Here are pictures of what i mean: ROUTE OPTION DEACTIVATED: [Image: http://i68.tinypic.com/qs05t2.png] ROUTE OPTION ACTIVATED: [Image: http://i63.tinypic.com/of33nk.png] any idea why this happens? i also noticed this issue yesterday at another airport. the weather was also good yet visibility dropped to 5 miles when using the Route option. Visibility at high altitude / Visibility issues with route option on - fsxwx - 2016-03-29 Let me split my answer in two parts: 1.) Generally, you are right: the visibility above clouds and/or in high altitudes is usually not so much affected by fog or low visibility on the ground. But then FSX/P3D comes with its limitations which do not play very well with this fact (*). This is because FSX/P3D only can reduce the visibility around your viewpoint uniformly in all directions, i.e. when you are sitting on the ground with 1 mile visibility and then climb to 15.000ft with 10 miles visibility you have everything in sight on the ground. And thats's somehow odd, too, isn't it? The only way to alleviate the problem a bit is 1. to generate a low cloud layer that block your view on the ground and 2. accept a compromise on lower visibilities in higher altitudes. FSXWX uses both methods depending on the circumstances. And indeed, it could be the case that your cruising altitude (15.000ft) still has an 'artificially' reduced visibility due to ground fog. Full upper visibility is only restored at around 20.000ft. * For the sake of completeness: This is not true for P3D with volumetric fog enabled. --- 2.) When you use the route option the exact visibility of your ADEP airport is used, if not, it is an average of multiple surrounding stations which might lead to a higher visibility value. But I would like to check myself (with historic weather) if you tell me the time of your observations. Visibility at high altitude / Visibility issues with route option on - chriszoepound - 2016-04-02 1)Is there anyway to modify where the layer of upper visibility begins? ( like ,,instead of around 20000 feet, lower it to around 12000 feet maybe). 2) It was at the exact time while I was writing this post.maybe from 5 minutes prior.given the time i'd take to finish writing the post. That day, when i noticed first the low visibility i checked the current weather on the internet, and indeed it was 5 miles visibility from the ground, but it was sunny, clear skies.. thus eliminating the possibility of fog.(plus its the Caribbean, ground fog conditions are very rare). It might be a limitation of FSX..taking 5 miles visibility as foggy conditions. I now have an idea of what happens when the route option is enabled, and why visibility becomes so foggy, based on what you are telling me. In real life, i am 2 hours ahead of fsxwx stated time. Im going to post data from fsx right now. For me its currently 10 am while for fsxwx its 8 am I've done the test with route option enabled and disabled right now and the change in visibility is not happening: Route Disabled 08:08: 119 METAR reports + 315 GRIB points processed - 71 points in total - 71 new points created 08:08: Injection mode: all - 71 new stations created - 71 stations injected [Image: http://i65.tinypic.com/bea2z7.png] Route Enabled 08:10: 120 METAR reports + 315 GRIB points processed - MKJS added to grid - MKJP added to grid - 73 points in total - 73 new points created 08:10: Injection mode: all - 73 new stations created - 73 stations injected [Image: http://i68.tinypic.com/2a6nl1j.jpg] Im sorry for the late response I've been busy with classes these days. |
