Wind aloft being 120 knot and over
#1
Hi I'm actually in the flight deck of the B777 doing EHAM-TNCM. Like yesterday I noticed the wind aloft being 120 knot and over. I obviously consulted few chart of wind aloft to find out that they are only 60knot or less. Can you look into that. Thanks!

I would need more information and details to look into that.

First and foremost, I need to know where (lat, lon, height) and when you experienced this mismatch.
What was your other reference for winds aloft?

I have attached a screenshot of PFPX with a route/flightplan from EHAM to TNCM that is also showing the winds aloft.
Based on these reports I also made a quick'n'dirty test in FSX and placed the aircraft at several waypoints along the route to see what winds aloft FSXWX gave me. And this was actually not too bad.

As you can see, in the first part of the route there are in fact high winds (e.g. LESDO 340/110 at FL330) reported also by PFPX.

I'll do another flight and record all the datas. For example over England and over the ocean I had my winds liked at 332/123kt. After disabling true wind aloft the speed dropped but the direction was still wrong as I was expecting headwind(265°).
I was using chart from https://aviationweather.gov/iffdp/fdwndc

Ok, thanks. I am looking forward to your next (test)flight results. :-)

Hm, yes, disabling the option 'True winds aloft' actually will result in not very accurate winds aloft which are extrapolated from the surface winds.
I implemented that at the very beginning before I got to grips with winds aloft data as a fallback in case winds would get crazy (without the GFS/GRIB data that was possible...). Meanwhile, I think these calculated winds aloft are dispensable and I do not use them at all.
